How to Rent a Truck From Penske

The first thing you want to do is get a quote. You can do that by calling or by using their online tool. You can get multiple quotes by varying your pick-up and drop-off locations.

Rent a Truck From Penske

When my family made a long-distance move, we found that it was cheaper to rent the truck if we picked it up out of state. Maybe that was because we currently lived in California. It was cheaper to pick it up from Reno than from a more local facility.

We also ended up needing to drop the truck off in a different state than our destination because that was the closest facility. My point here is that you can benefit from being flexible with your pick-up and drop-off locations. That might mean getting multiple quotes at once.

Don’t hesitate to compare your Penske quotes to other rental truck companies. Penske will be the best deal if you have a long-distance move, but it won’t hurt to look elsewhere for a better one, especially if it’s not a one-way trip. Look around and find the best deal for you.

Penske Rental Truck Prices

The rental price will depend on the distance you’ll cover on your trip, the size of the truck you’re renting, and the insurance you choose for your trip. If you know the distance of your move, which size of truck you need, and the dates of your move, you can get a quote from Penske’s website for an approximation of the rental price for your move.

Distance

Distance is the biggest factor in the price of your rental. If your move is under 50 miles, you can expect to pay between $132 and $200 daily. For moves between 50 and 250 miles, the average rent is between $200 and $600 per day. If your move is more than 250 miles, it may be anywhere from $600 to $1,200 per day, but you can get a discount on that one pretty easily.

Payment

Penske accepts several types of payment. You will need a credit card to secure your reservation if you want to pay when you pick up the truck, but aside from that, they accept bank and cashier checks and cash. They can’t accept cash payments over $5,000, but you can split payments between more than one type of payment.

Drop Off

One more thing to remember is that when you drop off the truck, it will need to be in the same state that you picked it up in. That includes the volume of the gas tank. Before you drop off the truck, you will have to refill the gas tank, which is another cost on top of the rental price.

Rental Trucks Insurance Types:

Limited Damage Waivers (LDW)

A truck rental company’s damage waiver covers you from financial responsibility if you experience any loss or damage to the truck. Without a Limited Damage Waiver (LDW) policy, you will be liable for any damage to your rental truck regardless of who is at fault.

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)

This covers any damage claims from a third party from an accident up to $1,000,000. This type of insurance only covers truck drivers who are at least 21 years old and authorized to drive the truck by the rental agreement.

Cargo Protection (CAI)

This moving truck insurance protects you and any listed authorized drivers’ belongings, furniture, and other possessions while inside the truck. This coverage covers damage due to accidents or natural disasters during transit and only while in the truck. Of course, there are exceptions. For instance, this type of protection doesn’t typically cover damage caused by theft or shifting cargo, or damage while loading or unloading is not covered. There are limitations to the amount covered, and there will be a deductible. Be sure to read up on the specifics of what this type of protection does and doesn’t cover.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

PAI offers accidental death and accident medical coverage for the truck’s renter and passenger(s). Passenger coverage is provided within the enclosed portion of the rental vehicle only. This insurance pays in addition to other available insurance.

Towing Insurance (TWI)

Auto Tow Protection insurance provides renters with coverage for damage to their personal automobile while it is being towed by the rental truck using a car carrier or tow dolly. Damage covered by this policy typically includes anything caused by fire, collision, flood, hail, windstorm, landslide, or explosion.

Also, speak to your homeowner’s insurance company about coverage while moving. Your credit card company will not be responsible for covering any damages during your rental.

Services Offered by Penske Truck Rental

A rental truck isn’t the only thing you need for a successful move. So, Penske offers other services to help make your move as smooth as possible.

Self-Storage

If you need a place to store your furniture and boxes before you move them into your new living space, you may want to look into self-storage. Penske offers a couple of ways to make finding self-storage easy and affordable.

The first is with SpareFoot. Penske uses SpareFoot to offer you a huge range of storage units so that you can choose the best one for your needs. You have over 10,000 places to choose from, and you might be able to find discounts that are exclusive to your neighborhood. You can search the units by any factor you need, including size, price, and location.

Penske also works with CubeSmart, which is simple and flexible to work with. It has locations all over the U.S. with professional packing supplies, climate-controlled units, and vehicle storage.

Moving Supplies

One of the most demanding parts of a move is getting everything properly packed up and figuring out how to get it where you want it to be. That means having all the boxes and other packing supplies you need for everything, the means to easily get them onto the truck, and the means to safely get your furniture and vehicles to your destination.

Penske can cover all of those things. Need boxes? Packing tape? Box cutter? Mattress covers? Penske can provide all of that, as well as any other packing supplies you need to secure your belongings during the trip, such as bubble wrap, foam peanuts, moving blankets, and bungee cords. You can also get box markers and padlocks. Shipping is free for orders over $25.

You can also rent hand trucks for moving boxes from your home to the truck, furniture pads to protect your furniture during the move, and towing equipment so that you don’t have to worry about driving both the truck and your car.

Moving Labor

You don’t have to load the truck yourself. Penske partners with Simple Moving Labor to offer you help with loading and unloading your rental truck. So instead of throwing your back out playing Tetris with your furniture and boxes by yourself, you can get professional assistance to get everything in and out of the truck.

Then, the next time you move, you can get a discount on the same service. This deal is ideal when you need to drop stuff off at a self-storage unit before bringing it to your new home or if you don’t expect to stay in the new place for long.

Roadside Assistance

Penske keeps their trucks in good condition, always giving them a check over before letting you rent them. So it’s unlikely they’ll break down, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. In light of that possibility, Penske has a 24/7 Roadside Assistance team that you can call for any help you may need in the middle of a drive.

They can help you with a flat tire, a fluid leak, a mechanical problem, and more. They want to get you back on the road as soon as possible, and they can use their service network to help with that.

Quicken Loans

Help with the transit to the new place is one thing, but what about helping get a loan for the new place? Penske gives you a great deal through Quicken Loans, an Equal Housing Lender.

As a Penske Truck Rental Customer, you can get exclusive mortgage deals with Quicken Loans, including cash back after the deal closes. You can also get a mortgage review specific to your situation to help you compare loan options, and their Home Loan Experts will treat you like a VIP.

Discounts From Penske

Now, Penske is not known for being the cheapest rental truck company, but there are ways that you can get a good deal on your rental. Some are only for certain groups, but others are available to anyone. So, here are the ways that you might be able to get a discount on your rental truck.

One-Way Unlimited Mileage

While other companies charge for miles over a certain amount, Penske is the only one to offer free unlimited miles when you make a one-way trip. That makes Penske ideal for long-distance moves. Instead of being charged for going a long way, you get free mileage.

Promotional Discounts

Penske offers limited-time discounts that you can take advantage of if your move lines up with the discount schedule. For example, at the time of writing, Penske is offering a 10% (or more) discount during October of 2022 if you use the promo code on their website.

Though this discount is likely over by the time you read this, you should still be able to check that web page to see if Penske is running any discounts that you can grab.

AAA Discounts

Since AAA Insurance is partnered with Penske, AAA members can save 12% or more on both truck rentals and moving supplies. If you are a AAA member, you can call AAA to find out more about your discount.

Military Discounts

As a special thanks to military personnel, Penske offers a 10% discount on truck rentals for active-duty military members and veterans. You can get this discount with the code MILITARY. You will need to show your Military ID or proof of your Veteran status when you pick up the truck to validate the discount.

College Student Discounts

College students do a lot of moving, and college tuition and living are expensive. To help out with that, Penske gives students a 10% discount on truck rentals with the promo code STUDENT. If you use this code, you will need to provide your college ID or proof of enrollment status when you pick up the truck to get your discount.
